That's right, you heard me!

Kalijor.com has been completely redesigned and is up and running! It took a few months of trial and error, but I finally got it very close to the way I wanted it to be from the beginning (still a few things I will eventually tweak out fully but for now I am happy with it)!

I have even managed to get some art commissioned so you will see some cool images, mostly of characters, posted around the site. I am always looking for more though so if you know an artist that is willing, or you yourself are an artist that is willing, I would love to get some fan art going and spruce things up some more!

So, go check out Kalijor.com version 2.0 and let me know what you think!

Is this not the coolest comic book movie ever made?

I mean seriously, they nailed the character of Tony Stark, nailed the technology, from the armor all the way down to the little flashes of his OS interface on his home computer systems!

We got the DVD on Monday (the day before it hit stores which was pretty cool), and I watched the move and all four hours of behind the scenes stuff while working on Tuesday. Everything about the damn movie from its inception to completion and beyond was amazingly well put together and all in the spirit of the character and books.

This is the kind of movie you get when those involved love the source material and work hard at doing it great justice. Kudos to all those involved in the project!

I know they've already signed on for IM2. I just hope John agrees to direct it and we get the same cast. They all did an amazing job and played their parts to a 't'!

OK, you're turn now. What did you think?

Art contest for the first Kalijor Novella!!

May 1st 2008!
I know I have been promising this for a long time now, but a great many things have happened in the interim to slow this project down a bit. However, I am now ready to proceed and the text is entering its final stages of revising for publication. So now, I want to pass on a couple of details and get this contest rolling!

To begin with, I want to share with you the intent of this contest. Here in Denver there is a local radio station that does an annual fundraiser for the Children’s Hospital and I am always so tight on my budget that I am never able to contribute anything. However, I always force myself to listen to the telethon for its entire 36 hours because I know that facility has been there for me when I was young, and more recently for my own children as well.

So, I would like to start off this contest by saying that ALL proceeds (that’s 100% of the profit from all books sold) will be donated to the Denver, Colorado Children’s Hospital. It may amount to $25, or it could be $1,000,000 (wouldn’t THAT be cool?), but either way, all proceeds from the sale of this book will be donated to the hospital, so please, participate with the knowledge that we are helping kids and their families through some potentially trying times.

Alright, that having been said, here’s the deal. Beginning today, May 1st 2008, I am accepting art submissions for one full color cover and nine (9) black and white chapter header images for the Jumah’s World: A Tale From Kalijor novella. Submissions will be accepted through the month of May with the final submission deadline being 11:59:59pm MDT, May 31st, 2008.

I am afraid that, unless any interested parties wish to sign on as prize contributors, the best I am offering in the way of prizes is a free copy of the finished book, and the knowledge that your artwork is not only in a published book, but going to help children in need!

Judging will be performed in two rounds beginning on June 1st. The first round will be myself and a panel of others that know my writing and will be able to identify which pieces are in keeping with the theme/spirit of each chapter or the whole work. Together we will select the five (5) pieces that best represent the chapter they are submitted for, or the book as a whole. After that, the selected finalists will be displayed here and on my website at WWW.KALIJOR.COM where you, the community will vote for the winning pieces. The first round of judging will be finished, and the finalists posted by Wednesday, June 4th. Community judging of finalists will be closed at 11:59:59pm MDT, Saturday, June 14th. Winners will be notified on Sunday, June 15th.

After winners are selected and notified, the art will be laid out, added to the book and submitted for publishing at my expense. The process typically takes 2 to 4 weeks for proofs to be made, sent out, approved and then accepted as final so the publishing date should be around mid July somewhere.

Submit as often as you like and in as many areas as you like, but in order to involve the entire community I must insist that any single individual can only be featured in one place in (or on) the book, so keep your submissions to the area you most want to see your work appear. All work must be rated PG-13 in order to stand any chance of being published with this piece. All submissions shall be submitted to me via posting in your own gallery and sending me a note so that I can add a link to the contest update page. Finalists will need to forward high-resolution digital files to me via email so that they can be compiled and displayed in my gallery and on my web page at WWW.KALIJOR.COM for final community voting.

Ok, that’s the basic run-down of the rules. Please see the bottom of this post for more detailed information on sizes/specifications for submitted images. Here you will find links to the individual chapters of the story (bear in mind that these are not the final, edited, copies, but the story is complete and cohesive enough that we can proceed without fear of any severe changes). I have intentionally been vague with details about settings, people, and things in order to allow you, the community, to express the world as you see it in your mind’s eye. This is a community project so I want it to be reflective of the community more than my own personal vision.

Jumah’s World Volume III
Jumah's World Volume IV
Jumah’s World Volume V
Jumah’s World Volume VI

Cover Image:
The final cover image size is 12.4” X 9.25” (31.47cm X 23.49cm) and the focus of the image (the cover of the book) will be on the RIGHTMOST 6.125” X 9.25” (15.6cm X 23.49cm). The background or ancillary image area will wrap around the spine and the back cover of the book. This image will be in full, high-gloss color and you should allow for an area approximately 3” X 3” (7.62cm X 7.62cm) to be partially covered by the book’s title within the cover area. The cover art should be in keeping with the spirit of the story and characters within and must be rated PG-13 in order to be considered for publication.

Interior/Chapter Heading Images:
Interior art shall be black and white and shall not exceed 4” X 4” (10.16cm X 10.16cm) in area (or can be submitted in any square size above that with the understanding that it will be reduced to approximately 4X4 which may result in the loss of detail). Each piece must be in keeping with the spirit of the contents of the individual chapter for which it is submitted, and must be rated PG-13 in order to be considered for publication.

Legal stuff. By submitting art to this contest you are affirming that A) the art is your original work and not legally spoken for by any other party or entity and that it is legally available for publication and B) that you are forfeiting your own right to any form of compensation, monetary or otherwise, for this piece of art as it relates to the publication of this piece of written fiction. You the artist still retain the full, legal copyright to the piece of art but are hereby releasing myself (Paul Lell) and my organization (Kalijor Press) from any legal responsibility to compensate you monetarily, or in any other way, for any sales of this book or any other media (whether printed, digital, or in any other form heretofore known or unknown) related to or derived from this book or its sales. I the author am hereby bound to release all profits generated directly through sales of this work to the Children’s Hospital in Aurora, Colorado on a quarterly basis, in perpetuity. I the author also reserve the right to use this book and all associated works of art in the promotion of my other books and am not legally obligated to compensate any of the participating artists in any way for any monetary or other gains that result from said promotions.

Zyrik the Dragon Slayer

Zyrik the Dragon Slayer

Zyrik was forged by the dwarven masters in the mystical forges of Kalek'Tinal untold ages ago. The weapon was created with the singular purpose of laying waste to the scourge of dragons that had befallen Kalijor and crushed the will of its people beneath their scaly might. The weapon is imbued with the power to do incredible amounts of damage to beings with draconic blood coursing through their veins but its most devastating power was not even conceived of by the greatest craftsmen and mages on Kalijor until the day it was invoked by its wielder.

The greatest Weaponmaster in Kalijor's history was given charge of Zyrik. He was a hulking behemoth of a Minotaur who wielded that massive sword as if it was a simple extension of his arm and at the head of the elven and dwarven armies he cut a swath through the hordes of dragons making the land safe again for the people of Kalijor. But he knew that in order to be truly safe, the land would have to be rid of the dragon king Tellamon. So the nameless Weaponmaster left his armies behind and forged ahead into the blinding snow and driving winds of the Southern wastes where, ant the top of the highest peak in the bleak night he faced Tellamon in single combat for the fate of Kalijor.

On through the night they battled and it is said that explosions of magic and flashes of light could be seen as far away as the Burning Expanse and that the thunderous clash of enchanted steel on ancient scale and bone could be felt by the youngest of babes laying silently in their cradles as the world held its breath in anticipation. But it was not to be. Despite the dwarves best efforts, the mighty Zyrik was not powerful enough to smite the great king Tellamon. Until in one final, desperate act of selflessness, the unnamed Weaponmaster offered up his own life, forcing his heart and soul into one final devastating blow. It is said that the light from Zyrik's blade shone like a beacon in the failing night sky and lit up the Gehlid mountains like a thousand stars on the clearest night, and the great beast was undone and his grip on Kalijor was loosed forever.

Of the unnamed Weaponmaster there was nothing remaining save or the sapphire he wore around his neck. As tribute to his strength and ultimate sacrifice, the sapphire was imbedded within the pommel of the great dragon slayer Zyrik and to this day, any who find themselves in the most desperate of conflicts with the life and freedom of many on the line can call upon the will of the unnamed hero and offer up their own life in exchange for the destruction of one who would threaten Kalijor.

________________________________________ ____________________
This massive sword is nine feet long, gleaming silver, and bears a simple, but elegant handle, hilt, and pommel. Its only distinguishing feature, aside from its exquisite craftsmanship and balance, is the large sapphire mounted in the base of the pommel. There are a series of dwarven runes running down the blade's fuller, however they are so subtle as to be almost unnoticeable except under extremely close scrutiny.

When used against normal foes, the weapon functions as a normal, albeit exceptional, weapon. However when used against any creature with draconic blood in its veins, the claymore will glow brightly whenever it comes into contact with the creature's body. The swords is also able to block dragon breath attacks, causing them splay out away from the wielder of the claymore, as if some sort of magical barrier is deflecting it.

Nut much more to add than the title already has.

Personally I like to take a few minutes around this time of the year to look back on the rials and tribulations of the year as it moves into yesterday. It is a time of reflection and the resolving of perspective. A couple of weeks with my family always helps me to refocus my energies and realize that all that has happened over the year, all of the battles--whether they end in victory or defeat--are all learning experiences and would never have been possible to pull through without the support of my family and friends.

So thank you to each and every one of you, for being a part of my extended (and regular depending upon who is reading this) family. 2008 will be even better and brighter as we move on to new projects and different destinations.

In the coming year it is my goal to finish the Third Key of Kalijor, get through the rewritting/editing process on the Second Key of Kalijor, finalize the Kalijor RPG suppliment, finish and publish this other book project I have going on now, and launch a few short story compilations as well. All this and work and family to boot.

So hang in there because the ride is just getting off to a start and if you are here now, then you are on at the ground floor. The sky is no limit where Kalijor is concerned and I am not letting go until I see where we're headed. Movies? TV? Cartoons? Comics? Video Games? Heck yeah! Bring it on!

So, Merry holiday of choice to each of you and I hope the new year brings nothing but the best to each of you!

Remember, "Life is what you make it. So make it a good one!"

Character Idea -- Anca

Okay, to get a forum jumpin', I'm posting up a character idea I like.

Anca is the Kalijor avatar of Selena Oraya.

An ogre master of weapons born in, of all places, Talandor, she's a bit on the grouchy side. Growing up with a rash of gnomes and dwarves underfoot, who wouldn't be? But because of that, she has learned to fight oppenents much smaller than her on top of sparring (and loosing quite often) with her 2 older and much larger brothers.

The trident, an odd weapon for anyone to favor, became her choice after fishing with her mother on the shores of The Endless Ocean and the tale is told as this:

A small trident was being used to spear fish for dinner when her mother was attacked. Anca, still young, grabbed her own trident. After stabbing the tines into her mother's leg and arm in missed shots, she was terrified of taking another lest she actually hurt her seriously. Her mother exhorted her to take the trident and throw, for if she was going to die, it would not be in the maw of a sea creature! By a twist of fate, Anca missed her mother's head by mere inches throwing the trident wildly at the writhing creature. It struck home, embedding itself in the head of the snake-like monster. Her mother rescued, thanked her and promptly told her, with a large grin on her face, 'You're going to have to work on your trident skills before you save me again!'

And thus, Anca began to study akwardly with a trident. Since few trainers were available that even thought to use one, she had to learn a great deal on her own. The scars on her face show her early attempts to try it before working with a local trainer using a spear and working with the trident in her spare time. The spear had some advantages in range, but nothing felt as comfortable in her hands as the huge trident commisioned for her by her father.

Like most ogres, she's physically huge. Unlike most ogres in Kalijor, somehow, she has an odd mop of dark hair on her head. Of course, she has more scars on her face than there are weapons in Kalijor. Or at least it seems that way. Her dreadlocked bunch of hair seems to mimic the lines of scars and make them look even paler in contrast.

When she smiles, it's a scary sight to see with a mouth full of bad teeth and her scars distending with the stretching of her skin. However, if you look in her eyes, you can see the kindness borne of a loving family. She protects those she cares for, adding to her physical scars, but her heart stays open to the world, unscarred by the experiences she's been through. Here, her family is what matters. If you become one of those she considers family, consider yourself honored. If you become an enemy, take very careful steps or you'll find a trident skewered through your skull.

A corporate government is an interesting prospect at best. The government of the future is formed by an elaborite interweaving of the top-level management from various corporations with extreme, and far-reaching influence. In short, the more powerful a particular corporation is, the more influential they are in the political landscape of humanity.

Just as any corporation's leadership is made up of multiple levels or layers of people, each holding more power or sway than those immidiatly below them, the Sol system's government is made up of the CEO's of multiple corporations, the more powerful the corporation is, the higher up the chain of command the individual is.

Policy is decided from the top down, with the highest-level individual handing orders down to the next level for execution, and expecting follow-through that can be verified through a complicated system of analysis and metrics. If an action is determined to be more hassle than it is worth, typically the individual responsible for its having been carried out is removed from whatever position of power they hold. As a result, just as in the corporate world of old, tasks and directives are typically handed down as far as possible, to be carried out by the peons at the base of the pyramid.

Every person that lives within the developed areas of the Sol system, in some way or other, work for the conglomerate. Even John Doe that runs the local grocery store, is responsible for corporate directives on some level. Everyone that is not a dissident, makes their living within the corporate infrastructure. Housing is provided by the corporation, free of charge. As is food, health care, efficient public transportation, power, data, media, all provided by the corporation.

Because of the structure of the government, it is a miserable place for anyone not of the proper mindset to live and work (At least, anyone seeking power to any degree, the people at the bottom of the pyramid are usually perfectly happy and blissfully unaware of any form of complexities in the government) in an environment that is rife with espionage and back-stabbing.

Centuries ago, the government abandoned the idea of promotion based upon tenure and the 'open door' policy. The only way to get ahead in the government is by moving someone else lower on the ladder. There is no necessity in moving up one step at a time however, if you can prove the incopmetence of someone ten steps ahead of you, then you can try on their shoes, at least until the next eager go-getter comes along and dethrones you that is.

The corporation (that is to say, humanity) is ultimately governed by the Conglomerate, which is a group of five CEO's of the five most powerful, most influencial corporations in existance. It is widely rumored that the Conglomerate is actually ruled by a single, inegmatic individual that lives in teh shadows and is never seen or heard directly by anyone, at least not anyone who knows what they may have seen at any rate.

Each of the five CEO's has the power and resources of their own corporation behind them, and they all tend to constantly be vieing for power of the others. As a result they have each developed a private armada of ships and an army of troops that do their bidding. Publicly these forces all appear as one unified fighting force, and it is true in as much as whenever there is any kind of threat that faces the conglomerate as a whole, they will work together with great efficiency to fix the problem. However, when things are calmer, there is a great deal of tension between these forces whenever they encounter one another. They will constantly work against one another by establishing regular areas of influence where they enforce the will of their own corporation, but they will also try to expand their sphere of influence by moving in on other corporation's areas.

The end result fot the citizens living within these areas can be subjected to constant changes in military presence and minutia of the law that they bring with them. People living in the center of any power's turf are generally shielded from these effects, but those unfortunate enough to reside along the edges will usually know no peace from the effects of teh struggle.

Even with all of this political strife taken into account there is one thing that will pull all of the various entities within the corporation and the Conglomerate together, and that is dissidents. Dissidents are those people who choose to live 'off the grid.' They refuse to work for the corporation. They refuse to live within corporate facilities or benefit from their other offerings. Any time a pocket of dissidents is located, they are routed out by corporate forces and its people are 'reeducated' and reintroduced to life in a 'civilized' society. Those that resist this proccess are... misplaced... and usually never seen or heard from again.

There is an underground movement among the dissidents, and some of the citizens of the corporation. The movement is meant to unseat the conglomerate and establish a republic in its place, and it is, of course, resisted with the utmost ferocity by the Conglomerate. This is why the dissidents are rooted out and annihilated whenever they are discovered.

Katrina was born in the trade city of Rathalon to Ezrina Thorindal. Together with her twin sister, Riana, they grew up learning the ins and outs of the city and its surrounding areas. At the age of ten, their mother enrolled the twins in the Magic Academy where Katrina quickly found a love for the arcane arts.

While her sister was busy skipping classes to sneak out and learn to use a sword, Katrina threw herself into her studies. She quickly established herself as a star pupil and was moved into advanced classes. Over the years of her tenure at the academy she was given special access to some of the higher levels of the Great Library and allowed to assist in research of new and more powerful spells. She received high marks in alchemy and elementalism but decimated the curve in her incantations classes, consistently demonstrating that there was no spell beyond her abilities.

Her spell book quickly grew in size as she became more and more adept and was eventually invited to assist in the teaching of classes in preperation for becoming a full teacher at the academy when she graduated. However, she surprised the institution when she refused the position and instead, left the academy to travel with her sister in exploring Kalijor.

Physically, Katrina stands just shy of six feet tall and weighs in around one-hundred-ten pounds. She is fit, but spends the majority of her free time with her nose in a book. She has a thin frame and is not weak, but obviously spends very little time exercising. Her skin is the light color of an elf that spends most of her time indoors and under cover since the majority of their adventures have taken place within the city walls. She has long, metallic platinum hair that, when loose, hangs down to the middle of her back. She has bright, gold eyes and long tapered ears that are extremely expressive of her emotions. Her facial features are delicate, with high cheek bones and thin eyebrows. She is beautiful by most standards and spends some time trying to keep herself presentable, although the effort is really not that great, more of a pssing concern that is quickly overridden by her studies.

Katrina is friendly when approached, but normally looks as though she doesn't want to interact with people because her head is almost always stuck in a book of some kind. She loves to sit in a tavern with her sister while she munchs on light snacks and listens to adventurers wander in and out, telling their stories. She tends to be reserved around new people but always gives them the benefit of the doubt. Once someone has proven to her that they are not trustworthy, she will never be inclined to trust them again, but those she calls friend, and those in need will always take presidence in her life.

Riana Thorindal was born to Ezrina Thorindal in the trade city of Rathalon. As a young elf, she and her twin sister Katrina spent most of their time exploring the city and getting into whatever trouble they could scrounge up. They learned the ins and outs of the city and all of its secret highways and byways until they were ten, at which point they were enrolled at the Magic Academy to begin practicing the mage arts.

Partway through her second year at the Magic Academy, Riana began skipping some of her classes in order to sneak out to a local fishing village where an old adventurer was teaching her the art of the sword. For several years she kept her sword practice a secret from her mother, but she knew she could not keep up the lies for long.

In her fifth year at the academy, she was playing with some enchantments in one of the academy alchemy labs when the compound she was working on exploded in her face (due to the fact that she did not remember the apropriate protection spell to keep her volatile compound in check). The result of the explosion, she was officially suspended from the academy labs and all of her hair began to grow out in a thick, dark, purple color from that day forward.

For a few months she tried dying her hair so as to hide the new color from her mother but eventually she gave up trying to keep her secret. She told her mother that she had been skipping classes in order to study sword play and stopped dying her hair. Her mother surprised her by saying she knew about the classes and further, by giving her a new, dwarven short sword that she had comissioned speciffically for Riana.

After that day, Riana spent half her day at the academy in her incantation classes (both offensive and defensive), and the other half in the fishing village with the weapon-master, learning the art of the sword. Over time she began to integrate her skills and became a true spell-sword.

The twin's adventures led them all over the northern-half of the Plain of Serenity and into the Southern Wastes. They got into a lot of trouble, but also managed to acumulate some acclaim through their adventures. During her final term at the Magic Academy, Riana spent a great deal of time and energy researching ancient languages and symbology, even going so far as to sneak into the restricted levels of the Great Library in order to formulate a series of special inks, incantations, and markings that allowed the dwarven artisan, Dinedal, to apply her magical tattoos. The markings cover the majority of her body below her neck and all appear as a series of black, interlocking, almost tribal tattoos. However when she concentrates on casting a particular spell, the tattoo that represents that spell will glow into bright, vivid color (as do her eyes) as the effect of the spell is produced. Invoking the power associated with the magical tattoos causes her to experience symptoms of physical exhaustion, increasing in severity as the power of the spell increases. The exhaustion is not so bad that it knocks her out immediatly, more like each spell having the same effect of having jogged around the base of a tree for a few minutes. The trick is that the effects are cumulative and she can wear herself out quickly if she is in physical combat and using her magic as well.

A side effect of her tattoos is that she is no longer able to cast spells through the normal means of memorizing the incantations and reciting them. Instead, she must research the spell's effects, find an appropriate marking and formulate a compatible, enchanted ink. Then she must have the mark permanently applied to her body in order to invoke the spell. When she first had the tattoos applied, she included a great many spells that she did not yet know how to control, and as a result she still has a lot of research to do in order to increase her understanding of the spells enough to actually invoke them.

Physically, Riana stands around six feet tall and weighs in around one-hundred-thirty pounds. She is extremely fit, spending a great deal of time in physical training/conditioning. She is decptively strong for her size, with a svelt frame and great muscle tone. Her skin is the light color of an elf that spends most of her time indoors and under cover since the majority of their adventures have taken place within the city walls. She has long, dark purple hair that, when loose, hangs down to the middle of her back, although she usually keeps it up in a pony tail. She has deep violet eyes and long tapered ears that are extremely expressive of her emotions. Her facial features are delicate, with high cheek bones and thin eyebrows (also dark purple in color). She is beautiful by most standards although she would never admit it, or even think about it, and spends almost no time trying to enhance her looks in any way.

Riana is friendly and outgoing, eager to meet new people and hear their tales of adventure. She loves to sit in a tavern and munch on light snacks while watching adventurers wander in and out, telling their stories. She assumes the best about people until they prove to be unworthy of her trust and will go to great lengths for a friend or anyone in need of help.

I just wanted to say hello and welcome to all of the new arrivals to the forums. Thank you all for stopping by and please make yourselves at home.

I am currently working on an RPG book that I hope to have in print around the middle of summer if all goes well. We will see what happens. As soon as I get the bulk of that project done I will get back to building the basic threads here.

In the mean time, please feel free to hang out and hout out. I want this to be a place where we can all dialogue freely, and create our own, unique stories within the world of Kalijor.

So again I say, Welcome! Pull up a chair and stay a while!

Some time in the late twenty first century, circa 2090, the human race took its first tentative steps off of their home world and began living in space. Their first off-world colonies were in orbital space stations that hung in orbit around the Earth and moon. Over the next three-hundred years they continued to branch out and expand across the solar system. New developments in propulsion technology made intra-system travel more like daily commutes, allowing people to travel between the Earth and moon in a matter of minutes, and out to more distant planets in a matter of hours.

As humanity expanded outward the economy that drove it also grew into a robust commerce between worlds where entire cities began to focus on single industries. The city of Hector on Mars became one of the primary sources for hydroponically grown food in the system and its sister city, Achilles, just as quickly dominated the manufacturing industry.

As commerce grew so to did the need to have a central hub or distribution outlet for goods. Since Earth was the most likely location, as well as being the most populace world in the Sol system and therefore in need of a majority of the goods in question, it was decided to build a massive space station in Earth’s local space to become the needed hub. It took nearly one-hundred years to complete the massive project, although it began fulfilling its intended role some ten years after construction began, increasing capacity as construction continued.

Once completed, the Earth-ring station became the seat of power in the solar system. The ring was administered by a conglomerate of mega-corporations that had jointly financed the project when the Earth governments had refused to do so. As commerce in the system began making this conglomerate astronomical amounts of money they hatched a scheme to wrest power away from the political bodies that still quibbled back and forth on the planet’s surface.

After nearly fifty years of planning and gathering resources, the conglomerate proceeded to buy up all of the debt that the nations of the Earth had accrued over centuries of financial mismanagement. They then gave the governments in question –namely the super-power nations, The United States, China, Japan, Russia, The United Kingdom, etc.— ninety days to repay their outstanding debts. When none of the governments repaid their debts, the conglomerate foreclosed on all of them and took possession of the majority of the countries. Shortly after, they began a political restructuring, carving up the globe and putting their own figure-heads in charge of the puppet show that world politics had become.
Slowly they then began to take financial control of the smaller countries, beginning with the third-world and then sweeping through Europe . While most countries began to experience unprecedented progress and unheard of monetary gains across all industries there were those elements that resented what had been done and fought for every scrap they could take.

Eventually the dissidents struck a major blow, to themselves as well as the conglomerate when they hacked into the strategic defense systems and initiated a global mass-destruction, in an attempt to destroy the seats of power that the conglomerate’s figureheads occupied. In the devastation, more than eighty percent of the Earth’s surface was rendered uninhabitable and billions of people were killed.

In true entrepreneurial style, the conglomerate used this event to illustrate the dangers of partisan political rule and convinced the remainder of the human race that a system of corporate government was in fact a better way to proceed. Shortly, the conglomerate had seated itself on top of a vast, complex corporate landscape that governed the human race as though it were one massive corporation.

The conglomerate quickly built a large fighting force of ships and soldiers in order to quickly quell any form of resistance or fledgling political parties that may have risen up against them.

Over the next five-hundred years the Human race prospered, although not everyone was happy about it. The benefits of corporate rule were many, especially in the areas of technology and medicine. The average life-span increased to nearly two-hundred years and space travel continually became cheaper and faster. Fewer wars –public wars at least—were fought and those that were, were ended almost before they began due to swift intervention from the conglomerate fighting force and their superior technology.

Today the conglomerate is presided over by five executive officers that use a simple majority vote system to determine policy. Beneath these executives is an elaborate network of subordinates that support their higher-ups dutifully in hopes of one day getting the big promotion into upper management. All businesses in some way report to someone within the structure of the conglomerate and all profits are absorbed into the non-stop machine that is the government of the human race.

Anyone who draws a pay check inevitably gets their money from the corporation, even if it is through back channels or black market connections. Health care is free to anyone that is a registered citizen of the corporation, as is housing and the essentials of life, food, entertainment, basic supplies and so on, all provided free of charge simply for being a citizen of the corporation. Most people are either unaware or choose to ignore the fact that the corporation reserves the right to eavesdrop on conversations, communications and exchanges throughout the Sol system in order to keep tabs on the workings of their empire.
There is a group of secret police that enforce company by-laws and bring to justice those that break said by-laws. Justice is usually swift and extreme, although hardly ever public.

The year as of the beginning of the story is approximately 3040 AD.

The Dregs are an assemblage of asteroids witin the Sol system's asteroiid belt that have been hollowed out and connected together to form a rather unique population center. Each asteroid is its own, self-contained environment that is linked to those around it through a series of tunnels and tubs that allow easy movement from habitat to habitat. However, each of these habitats can be isolated from the others instantly if anything happens that would otherwise jeopardize the integrity of teh network.

The people that live in The Dregs do so because they choose to live 'off the grid' and away from the corporate landscape of the rest of humanity. The Dregs are nearly self sufficient, requiring only minimal food-stuffs to be imported. By mining the surrounding asteroids, the inhabitants of The Dregs are able to produce metals, machines and equipment, and even drinkable water, oxygen to breathe and hydrogen to fuel their ship's drive systems. They are even able to export certain products, such as drive systems and super-dense hull plating that can not be made as cheaply anywhere else in teh system due to labor laws and the constraints of forming the material's matricies in gravity fields.

One of the largest buyers for such components is the conglomerate, although they would never publicly admit to it. All transactions are handled by third parties and usually take the form of commodity exchanges since the people of The Dregs do not use standard credits, or give them any value at all.

The people that live in The Dregs do so by choice, and even though their lives are difficult, they earn their living through hard work and toil, but live happily and feel fullfillment at the end of the day.

The Mars Station is a large space station that was built in geosynchronous orbit around the red planet hundreds of years ago. The original purpose of the station was to allow larger vessels to dock in orbit and allow maller vessels to haul goods to and from the planet at a much reduced cost. It quickly grew into a center of commetce foer the Sol system since nearly all food was grown on the surface of the planet.

As technology changed the cost and value of space trsvel, and made much smaller, faster, more afordable ships capable of hauling more and more cargo, the station became used less and less for its original midway purpose and more for general habitation.

As the years progressed, the station was added to and modified to accomodate more and more people until it now no longer even resembles its original design.

The Mars Station is now more of a third-world country than a center of commerce. Living conditions for most of the population, which numbers into themillions, are terrible at best. The environment is unclean, the infrastructure for waste disposal and clean water distrobution is in constant need of repair and power is available in some areas only intermitantly.

The hallways are filled with merchant's tents that are set up alongside ramshakle tents and lean-to's where those that are unable to afford their own housing make their homes. The people that live here re generlly of two different types, the squallidly poor, unable to even look someone else in the eyes, and the immensely rich, unwilling to give anyone else the time of day.
